Valentine was a retired admiral in the Barrayaran Imperial Service who was appointed as an Imperial Auditor during the reign of Gregor Vorbarra. By the time of Simon Illyan's eidetic chip failure, he was too ill to actively carry out his duties.
Miles Vorkosigan considered him to be a trifle too conservative for his tastes.
