Sociopath therapy was a form of psychological treatment; not always voluntary, it had a distinct possibility of damaging an individual's personality.
It was particularly widely used on Beta Colony, but many other places used it as well. It was not well-regarded by Barrayarans, however; they responded to the possibility of it being done to them with horror.
Some particularly apt references in the Vorkosigan Saga:
- "They'll slap a stun-net over me so fast—you'll see me in a month or two, walking around smiling. You're always smiling, after the M.H.B. gets done."
- ―Arde Mayhew's opinion of the results of sociopath therapy[src]
- "Vervain is not at war. His actions may have been illegal, warranting arrest, trial, jail, or sociopath therapy—where did the trial part drop out?"
- ―Miles discusses handling of a criminal with Cavilo[src]
- "The Betans would consider something like this a matter for nonvoluntary sociopath therapy. Up to and including neurological rewiring, if there were underlying physical deficits discovered."
- ―How Betans would deal with a nasty murder case.[src]
- "I wish I knew where he hid his scalp collection; I'd bring it just to show the judge. Sociopath therapy was invented for people like him."
- ―Miles reflects on a particularly problematic recruit.[src]
